Meet Russell

BA/LLB, PRINCIPAL

Russell Mawhinney

Russell is the Principal of Queenstown Law. His areas of practice are:

​

  • Property law including Body Corporate matters, property investment, property development, construction contracts, and advice for overseas investors

  • Commercial law including business structuring, sales and purchases, finance, intellectual property protection, commercial agreements and disputes

  • Company law including governance advice, director’s duties and liability, constitutions and shareholders agreements, share sales, and prejudiced shareholder issues

  • Wills, Estates, Elder Law, Retirement Village Law,  and Relationship Property

  • Legal advice relating to sports and events, tourism, construction, and food & beverage industries

 

Russell is a former member of the New Zealand Law Society Property Law Section Executive Committee and a former Queenstown Lakes District Councillor.

​

He has been involved in numerous sports and community groups in Queenstown including golf, cricket, soccer, swimming and karate clubs (in support of his children); the Chamber of Commerce, Destination Queenstown Strategic Review Board, Wakatipu Health Reference Group, various working parties and hearing panels while on Council, and the local National Party executive.

​

Russell was a sportsman in his younger days, captaining NZ Universities and representing Otago, Northern Districts and Griqualand West (South Africa) in first-class cricket for a number of years, as well as playing age group rugby for Otago. He is currently the Chairman of Otago Cricket

​

Interests include mountain biking, golf, writing, and tasting good Central Otago wines.  Russell is also undertaking study for a Master of Laws.

​

His first book called “Blogs of the Travel Bugs” was published in 2013. Always up for a challenge, he has hiked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, and most recently Mt Kilimanjaro in 2024.
