HM Associates - Property & Business Law is a boutique law firm providing services to local and international clients in the fields of property law, business law, and trust/company structures. Our clients include property investors, property developers, a range of commercial entities, local businesses and families.
Current Partners:
Michael Redmond Holloway BCom LLB;
Russell Eric Wilson Mawhinney BA LLB
HM Associates Property & Business Law commenced practice on 1st April 2003 following the merger of Mike Holloway Lawyer (Mike Holloway) and Mawhinney ODea (Russell Mawhinney).
Mike Holloway, had been a partner in a Dunedin firm Smith Lousley & Smith
from 1975 to 1984. After a hiatus of some ten years he recommenced practice
in Queenstown in 1994 initially working for Buckham Stamers-Smith.
Mike originally established the Property & Business Law brand when he set
up his own practice Mike Holloway Lawyer in 1996. From 1996 to 2002 he shared
offices with another sole practitioner, Laurian ODea.
Russell Mawhinney arrived in Queenstown in September 2002 when he purchased the practice of Laurian ODea Lawyer. Laurian had practised in Queenstown since 1990 initially as a solicitor with Anderson Lloyd but eventually established her own sole practice in 1997. Russell had been in practice in Dunedin following his return to New Zealand from Hong Kong where he had been involved in Sports Marketing and Advertisement. Prior to that Russell had commenced his legal career in Hamilton in 1984 and also worked for Dunedin firms Anderson Lloyd and Webb Farry, although he is a native of Central Otago having been born and raised in Ranfurly.
The Partnership commenced on 1st April 2003 as Holloway Mawhinney ODea but changed its name shortly thereafter to HM Associates - Property & Business Law, basically because of pressure from our receptionist to come up with a name that was easier to say. Following continued expansion the firm moved into its current premises know as The Junction Building on 1st December 2003.
